Four sides, four players, one square foot of table. This Shut the Box measures 12 by 12 inches and lets up to four people play at the same time, each facing their own row of tiles. It is a long-standing pub favorite that settles in just as happily at a party or a slow afternoon indoors.

Most versions stop at nine tiles. Ours has ten wooden number tiles, which opens up more combinations with every roll. The tiles and dice are solid wood, and the playing surface is lined with soft felt that won't scratch. We include twelve dice — four of them spares — and a pouch to keep them in.

Rules come with the game. For younger players it doubles as practice in simple math, logic and taking turns, all without feeling like a lesson. Roll the dice, flip what you can, and it's your move.
