Matching pieces to a board
The rule of thumb is simple: the base of the king should cover about three quarters of a square. A 3-inch king is at home on 1.5-inch squares; a king near 4 inches wants squares of 2 inches or more. Every product page lists king height so you can check before you buy.
Wood, weighted or magnetic
Our wooden chessmen are turned in the classic Staunton pattern and finished by hand. Weighted high-polymer pieces add heft for players who like a piece to land with authority, and magnetic wooden pieces pair with magnetic boards for play on the move.
Boards without pieces
A board on its own is the right buy when the pieces are already chosen. Our tournament boards are flat, non-folding and sized for standard club chessmen.
Questions about pieces & boards
How do I know which pieces fit my board?
Measure one square. Pieces fit well when the king's base is roughly 75% of the square width. Our size guide has a table.
Do pieces-only sets include extra queens?
Many do. Check the product page: it lists exactly how many pieces are in the bag.
Do the pieces come with storage?
Yes, pieces-only sets ship with a storage bag or box so they stay together.
Is a non-folding board better?
For display and serious play, a flat board has no centre seam and sits perfectly level. For carrying, a folding board is easier.
