A good board deserves pieces that feel right. These are our heaviest: 34 chessmen molded in high polymer with extra weight, so they sit solidly and feel stable under the hand. The polished finish carries a wood-grain pattern in light and dark tones that looks natural next to almost any board.

The king measures 4.25 inches tall with a 1.85-inch base, and the pawn 2.37 by 1.39 inches, with every rank between scaled in proportion. That is tournament size, so we recommend pairing them with Staunton-style boards from 17 to 21 inches and larger. Two of the 34 pieces are spare queens.

This is pieces only, with no board in the box. If your old set has gaps, or a friend's does, this fills them in one go, and the gift package is already taken care of.
