About AMEROUS Chess Sets
Why a folding board
A folding chess set is a board and a storage box in one. Open it and you have a full playing surface; close it and every piece sits in its own felt-lined slot inside. Our 15-inch boards are the size most people settle on for home play, the 12-inch boards suit smaller hands and smaller tables, and the 10-inch travel sets slip into a backpack.
What the magnets are for
Each magnetic set hides a small magnet in the base of every piece. It is strong enough to keep a game in place on a train tray or a picnic blanket, and light enough that a move still feels like a move. If you play outdoors or with children who lean on the table, magnetic is the easy choice.
Two extra queens, every time
Promotion should not mean an upside-down rook. Our chess sets include two additional queens so a pawn that reaches the far rank becomes exactly what the rules say it becomes.
Questions about chess sets
What size chess set should I get for home?
For most kitchen and coffee tables a 15-inch board is the comfortable choice: squares are large enough to see the whole position, and the board still folds away. See our size guide for the details.
Are the magnets strong enough for travel?
Yes. The pieces stay put when the board is tilted or nudged, which is what makes these sets good for cars, planes and parks. They are not so strong that pieces are hard to lift.
Do the pieces store inside the board?
On the folding sets, yes. The inside of the board is lined and has a fitted slot for every piece, including the two spare queens.
Is a wooden set good for a beginner?
It is a very good first set. Staunton-style pieces are the standard everywhere, so what a beginner learns on this board carries over to any club or tournament set.
