On the table

Pick up a knight from this set and you notice the weight first. We make the pieces in metal rather than wood or plastic, so they stand firm, shrug off drops and wear, and feel settled in the hand. The king stands 2.5 inches tall, with the queen, rooks, bishops, knights and pawns scaled in proportion.

Underneath them is a 14 by 14 inch board of solid wood, its 64 squares inlaid by hand from two contrasting solid wood veneers. Flocked bases keep the metal from scratching that surface and soften the sound of each move. Left out between games, it looks at home in a living room or a study.

The board is built with a top and bottom cover, and inside each piece has a slot of its own, so nothing knocks together in storage. It arrives in gift packaging with instructions — ready for the table the day it is opened.
