On the table

Not every chess set needs to be wood. This one is the lightest board we make for the road: a plastic magnetic board that measures 9.8 by 9.8 by 0.73 inches open and folds down to 9.8 by 4.9 by 1.46 inches. It opens and closes easily, shrugs off water, and slips into a bag without a second thought.

The armies are gold and silver instead of black and white. Each piece is molded from quality plastic with a smooth surface and sits on a magnetic felt base, so it holds its square in a strong wind and lands softly when you move it. The king stands 1.96 inches tall, the queen 1.73, and we add two extra queens.

A gift box and a sheet of detailed chess rules come with it, which makes this a friendly first set for a beginner of any age, and a handy spare for a seasoned player who travels.
