On the table

We built this set around a simple idea: a full-size game that travels. Open, the board measures 15 by 15 inches with 1.65-inch squares, so there is room to think. Closed, it folds down to 15 by 7.5 by 2 inches and weighs 3.6 pounds — light enough for a picnic bag or a weekend trip.

The playing surface is inlaid walnut and maple, sanded smooth along every edge. Inside, each Staunton piece rests in its own slot, so nothing rattles loose between games. Magnets in the board and the pieces hold a position steady on a train table or a camp bench, and felt bases keep the squares free of scratches.

We include two extra queens for promotions, sturdy hinges and metal clasps that resist rust, and a gift package for the day the set becomes a present. Unfold it, stand the pieces up, and it's your move.
