On the table

This is the set we would hand to someone learning the game. The board opens to 15 inches, large enough that the hand-carved wooden pieces are comfortable to pick up, and every piece carries a magnet so it holds its square. A bumped table or a bend in the road doesn't undo the position you have been building.

Fold the board shut and it becomes its own case. Inside, storage slots hold the pieces in place so nothing rattles loose in a bag or suitcase. We keep the set light on purpose, because a chess set that travels easily gets played more often — in the car, on a plane, at a campsite, on a school desk.

We also tuck in two extra queens, so a promoted pawn gets a real queen rather than an upturned rook. The wood is finished smooth by hand and stays pleasant under the fingers through a long game. Open it up, set the pieces, and it's your move.
