AMEROUS 12.6" Lidded Wooden Chess Set, Metal Pieces, 2.5" King

On the table

We designed this set around its lids. A top and a bottom cover close over the pieces, keeping out dust and guarding against knocks, so the chessmen last longer. Under the cover each piece rests in a separate slot, which means no rubbing, no jumble, and no hunting for a missing bishop before the game can start.

The pieces are metal, finely carved and heavy enough that each move feels deliberate. They resist drops and wear, and the flocked bases keep them quiet and gentle on the board. The king is 2.5 inches tall. The board is solid wood with handmade inlay, 64 squares across 12.6 by 12.6 inches, and 1.9 inches deep.

It works for a beginner's first lessons and for a practiced player's evening game, at home, at school or in the office. Between games it closes up into a tidy wooden box that earns its spot on display.
