On the table

A gift should be ready to play the minute the paper comes off, and this one is. Inside the gift box is a folding wooden board, 15 by 15 inches, with a full set of Staunton-style chess pieces, two extra queens and 24 checkers. Two classic games, one board, nothing else to buy.

Our artisans carve the chessmen by hand, and the king stands 3 inches tall. Each piece carries a slight magnetism, enough to keep it on its square while you play on a journey instead of sliding off at the first jolt. We finish the bases smooth so they never scratch the board beneath them.

The wood has a smooth texture that new players and longtime enthusiasts both appreciate. Fold the board when you are done and carry it along; the size that makes for a roomy game still packs down for the trip.
